Beyond Mystery Science

This course is designed for K-5th grade teachers implementing the “Mystery Science” science program in their classrooms.  In this course, teachers will explore the learning components of Mystery Science and discover ways to take their students even deeper into their understanding as they engage, explore, explain, elaborate, and evaluate within Mystery Science.  Participants will learn and implement simple adjustments and enrichments to move students beyond the basic level of Mystery Science as well as how the use of Mystery Science connects to the Universal Constructs.  Participants will also discover resources provided in Mystery Science that they may not have been aware of or may not yet be utilizing in their classrooms.   July 9 – Sept 29

Recognizing High-Quality Science Instruction (Admin)

Open to admins only – encourage your administrator to enroll! This is an evaluator approval licensure renewal option for administrators. The Iowa-adopted Next Generation Science Standards provide not only content but guidance on best practices in science instruction.  As instructional leaders, it is important for administrators to know and understand the NGSS innovations as they guide and evaluate teachers in the area of science.  This course will provide 5 hours of face-to-face instruction blended with 10 hours of online coursework through Canvas to allow you to better recognize best practices in science instruction and how these practices differ from traditional instruction. This course is open to 3rd-grade teachers or instructional coaches implementing the unit within a 3rd-grade classroom. In this course, participants will be introduced to an 8-9 week 3rd-grade unit that incorporates 28% of the science standards, and 29% of the social studies standards, plus 15 ELA standards and 6 math standards for that grade level in addition to Universal Constructs and SEL competencies.  Participants will dig into these areas and discuss student agency, inquiry, student discourse, and teacher as activator.  Participants will attend one face-to-face workshop day, implement the unit in their own classroom, complete online assignments,  readings, and reflections, and engage in one classroom coaching visit in their own classroom by a course instructor. This course is open to Kindergarten teachers or instructional coaches implementing the unit within a Kindergarten classroom. In this course, the participants will be introduced to a 4-5 week kindergarten unit. The unit incorporates the following standards – which comprise 46% of the kindergarten science standards and 37% of the kindergarten social studies standards. It also builds towards 27% of the math standards and 55% of the kindergarten ELA standards along with universal constructs and SEL competencies.  Participants will dig into these areas and discuss student agency, inquiry, student discourse, and teacher as activator.  Participants will attend one face-to-face workshop day, implement the unit in their own classroom, complete online assignments,  readings, and reflections, and engage in one classroom coaching visit in their own classroom by a course instructor. This course is intended for educators in grades 6-12 who are interested in learning more about OpenSciEd.  This course will offer a one-day face-to-face learning session around the instructional routines of OpenSciEd and an exploration of the available unit kit materials.  Participants will then select from a menu of additional asynchronous options to complete the course.
