Assessments
Assessment of skills and need areas are an essential part of preparing students for post-secondary living, learning and working. Skill assessment, rather than student preferences and interests, is necessary information for the IEP team to create a comprehensive postsecondary plan to meet student goals.
Available assessment tools are differentiated into 3 levels:
Essential Skill Level: Assessments in this category measure basic skills needed to be successful in each area of post-secondary life. These assessments can be used at different stages in the assessment process, for example younger students just beginning with transition, older students struggling with what their post-secondary goals should be, and/or students that only require essential living skills based on their post-secondary expectations.
Intermediate Level: Assessments in this category provide an assessment that goes beyond essential skills, for example students with greater responsibility at home, students entering sophomore to senior high school years, and/or students whose past assessments show no areas of need.
Comprehensive Skill Level: Assessments in this category provide deeper, more detailed information for students that are striving to live independently right after high school, students close to graduation and/or students that are struggling to understand what’s needed to live, learn and work after high school.
