Remote middle school/high school paper table challenge results


The Central Rivers AEA science consultants hosted our first remote challenge for middle school and high school teams in which they were tasked with building a table entirely out of newspaper.

The teams had the following constraints, which were also highlighted in the information and directions:

  • Table must be 21 cm tall
  • Table must have a 25cm x 15cm opening underneath
  • Table must be made out of newspaperTable
  • Table can only be held together with a maximum of 1 roll of standard masking tape.
  • Teams can only complete their final build within 1 hour time.

Teams were also asked to submit a short video of the participants explaining their roles in the building, their build process, and design choice.

Tables were tested and this process was videoed so teams could see their product being tested.  Awards were given for the tables that held the maximum weight as well as tables that were the most efficient.

The judges were pleasantly surprised to discover that the top placing tables were able to hold over 55 kg (121 pounds)!!
